Vietnam weather

Vietnam is the farthest country in the east of mainland Southeast Asia. If you take a look at its map, you will find its geography quiet interesting. The north is bordered with China, the northwest and western border is shared with Laos while the southwest is bordered with Cambodia. Its maritime coast is bordered by Gulf of Tonkin, South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand.

Vietnam is a land of tropics. Comprising of mountainous highlands, hills and dense forests in the lowland, it is famous for its beaches, resorts and rivers. Ranked as the 16th most biologically diverse country, it homes to 16% of the world’s species. Eight of Vietnam’s recreations have been listed as the World heritage by UNESCO World heritage Convention.

That is why, Vietnam is also a home to the tourists. All around the year, visitors from all over the world come to discover the natural beauty and fresh water species of the tropics. Hence, Vietnam weather is of utmost concern when planning to trip to this country.

Since Vietnam is stretched vertically, it experiences all four seasons throughout the year. Spanning on a wide range of latitudes between 8° to 24° N, its weather varies in the different regions of the country. Though it is divided in to 64 provinces, terrestrially it is divided in to four regions to describe its climate - Far North, Northern, Central and South Vietnam.

The Far North - This region of Vietnam comprises of the mountainous areas of Sa Pa, Ha Giang and Bac Ha. The dry and cold weather starts from October and ends in March while the wet rainy season lasts from April until the end of September.

Until past few years, these mountainous regions have started experiencing snow. In December and January, high cold conditions prevail with torrential rains likely to flood the area. The temperature descends below 0° C during the nights causing medium to heavy snowfall. The whole Vietnam flocks to the north to witness snowfall which causes severe traffic congestion.

The ideal time to visit the far north is October to April. Although you can do cycling and trekking all year around, September through November and March till May is a highly recommended period for trekking and adventure in the mountains of Sa Pa. Mild temperatures during the day varies between 15° C to 28° C making it an attractive time to hike, cycle and adventure. The wet weather conditions that start in April are not favorable for tourism.

The North - Mainly consists of Hanoi as the country’s capital and Ha Long Bay being one of the sought after locations for the tourists. Other regions includes Cuc Phuong, Mai Chau and Ninh Binh. These areas experience summer with hot, humid and damp weather conditions from April through September and undergo highest rainfall from July through September.

Winter in North is mostly cool and dry starting in November and ending in April. As summer starts to descend in September and winter approaches in November, weather becomes pleasant to visit Hanoi and Ha Long Bay.

The Central - The main places in this region include Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An. These are the major attractions for visitors because of their close proximity as well as nearby river banks and coast lines within few miles. The region has hot and arid conditions starting center January until late August. The maximum temperature reaches 35° C to 37° C. The temperature drops as you move towards the coastal areas because of cool winds flowing from South China Sea. Winter comes in the form of rainfalls during October and November. Due to its narrow land region, Central Vietnam is highly vulnerable to Typhoons, hurricanes and flooding.

The South - The southern Vietnam mainly covers Ho Chi Minh City, The Mekong Delta, Dalat & Phu Quoc. The weather conditions are consistent throughout the year. It tolerates two major seasons. The dry weather begins early November until the end of April or the beginning of May. Temperature and humidity level escalates in February. The damp season starts in May and lasts till November. It rains the whole season receiving highest rainfall typically in June through August.
