Information weather in HaLong Bay

The literal meaning of Ha Long is “Descending Dragon”. The name originated from a myth behind the formation of islets in Ha Long Bay. It is said that once when Vietnam was under attack, mother dragon along with her children was sent by the Jade Emperor for their help. The dragons emitted a number of pearls from their mouth that turned into these limestone islands to stop the attackers. It is said that it is this location where mother dragon arrived hence known as Ha Long Bay.

Ha Long bay consists of around 2000 tiny islands quite a few of which are hollow forming deep caves. Two of these islands are bigger than others with permanent dwellings. These islands provide tour facilities for the Bay. Some of these islands also have beautiful shorelines.

Just like other cities of the country, HaLong weather possess regular tropical climate of two major seasons – Hot and humid season with irregular rainfall starting in April and ending in September and Dry season including winter months from October till March. The annual average temperature is 23.7 degrees Celsius. Summers are hot with mean temperature of 34.9 degrees Celsius that can go as high as 38 degrees Celsius and as low as 5 degrees Celsius.

The month of March marks the beginning of lush spring in Ha Long. The place emerges with greenery and warmth after a cold winter in the previous months. Sun comes out and shines brightly with warmth making a mild perfect weather – neither too hot nor too cold. Colorful species come out to celebrate spring and welcome tourists with vigor and zest. That is why, this time is favored by tourists for visiting Ha Long. It is cloudy for most of the day hiding and revealing the treasures of the islands that creates an atmosphere of sailing in wonderland.

Spring ends in April as summer begins with increase in temperature and humidity from May onwards. From June to August, sun shines at its peak with sweltering heat and downpours are infrequent and heavy. 80% to 85% of the annual rain is recorded in these months with maximum precipitation level of 350mm. However, tourists enjoy to beat the heat by swimming in the green and blue waters of the bay. August to September is risky as it is high time for typhoons in the region. Thus, there is high chance of tour cancellation. It is recommended to check with your tour agency before making any booking.

HaLong Weather October to November is the Fall season and is considered the best time to visit the natural wonder site. Temperature level falls in between 26 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius. It starts getting drier with reduction in precipitation level as it proceeds to the end of the year and into a new year. It fluctuates between 4mm to 40mm making it around 20% of the annual average rainfall.

Winter starts in December and continues till February. Light drizzling, cold winds and cloudy skies create a mystical environment. Cold is not bearable by most visitors. Hence, it is recommended not to visit Ha Long bay during this season.
